Is there such a thing as being oblivious to that which is right in front of you?
To the point; how many of you have seen the commercials on NBC for the upcoming Paris Olympics?
They’re truly well done and for me, they get the juices flowing.
But the oblivious aspect I’m talking about is how many of you noticed that about seven sports have been highlighted, none of which are wrestling. As it always is.
For heavens sake, they even included the amazingly large spectator sport of skateboarding.
Beware UWW, this is the year where there’s a review to see if wrestling will remain a sport in the Olympics. I don’t know if they realize it of not, but getting shut out of NBC’s pre-event advertisements might set the tone for things to come.
I know, Wade’s beating the drum about our supreme lack of leadership in the sport. Which is ongoing and obvious for those who understand marketing, promotions, and revenue production.
Even if we had to pay NBC to include us in their advertising clip, it would pay huge dividends. But the UWW and USAWrestling wouldn’t think of such a thing just like they didn’t think very much in 2013 when wrestling got the boot from the Games.
Yet in Paris, wrestling might very well garner the largest percentage of medals to athletes of all the sports in the Games. We have a loaded lineup and I plan to be ready to cheer on our best with a dozen or so of hot wings and a cold beverage.
That is, if wrestling gets any air time on NBC’s main station, not the ones they push down to their lesser watched networks.
I hope I’m wrong, but when you keep doing what you’re always done, you’re destined to keep getting what you’ve always gotten.
